Free OCR to Word is a simple optical character recognition (OCR) program that scans your photos and extracts text from them.

If you have a lot of photos of text instead of PDFs, it can be a pain to try and find a program to extract the text from them. Free OCR to Word makes this process easy, allowing users to import images in popular formats and scan them for text. After the text has been extracted, Free OCR to Word easily exports the text to Microsoft Word.

In use, Free OCR to Word was extremely disappointing. While the interface is responsive and well-designed, the OCR just did not work. It couldn't recognize text from different images, even ones that were crystal clear. Check out our screenshots to see the hilarious text output. Even simple words were jumbled into incomprehensible text. Competitors like Adobe Acrobat Pro do a much better job at OCR but are expensive.

In the end, Free OCR to Word disappointed with terrible character recognition. While the interface is excellent, failing its one purpose is unacceptable.

Little Alchemy is an adorable Pokki-based element creation game for Windows.

Pokki? Element Creation?

Pokki is an application platform, a little like Adobe Air. You'll need it to install the game, but rest assured - it's free and only takes a click or two. Element creation games are a niche area of gaming that you'll either love or hate. The involve combining basic scientific elements - like air, earth and water - and seeing what new elements you can come up with.

Finding elements

Little Alchemy has 270 elements for you to produce, and it marks them as you find them. There's a search function, which is perfect when you have discovered more than fit comfortably in the interface. If you've reached the final result of any given element (i.e., it can't be combined with anything to make something new), it will glow red when you mouse over.

Lovely graphics

There are several games like Little Alchemy, but what makes this one stand out is the lovely interface. The elements have a lovely, whimsical appearance, and they are easy to work with. Little Alchemy doesn't offer many extra options - there are only two, in fact - but the "recycle" icon in the bottom right corner of the left-hand panel does offer a really easy way of clearing off your virtual workspace.

Personal taste

Little Alchemy is really just that - combine the elements and see what you get. This is surprisingly addictive, but there's always the chance that it just doesn't appeal. Given that Little Alchemy is free, though, there's no harm if you give it a try. Stinger is a minimalist antivirus application from McAfee designed to take care of specific threats that might be lurking on your computer.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that Stinger is a general antivirus. It's not - it's more of an extractor for a list of over 3,000 viruses specified by McAfee. The list is viewable from the program interface and, as with any other antivirus, you should try and keep Stinger as up to date as possible.

Stinger is very basic. Add the paths that you want to scan and hit the red Scan Now button. The program works quickly, summarizing results in the interface window. By default, Stinger will repair any viruses it finds, and you can export scan results under the File menu.

The Stinger configuration options are limited and quite advanced - you'll be able to specify what you want the program to do when it finds a virus, if you want to see a list of scanned files on the interface and an assortment of options relating to virus detection. Stinger is not a user-friendly program, but then again, it's not developed for your average user. If you are experienced, however, you'll find Stinger to be a helpful tool in your antivirus toolbox.

Snarl is the Windows equivalent of OS X's Growl notification application.

The default Windows notifications are terrible. Windows can only display changes one at a time and only for very specific applications. Snarl remedies Windows' poor notifications with their application and API for developers to integrate into their applications.

Snarl is easy to install and is completely open source (free!). After installation, system changes like the clock and network are automatically registered with Snarl to show notifications. There are a ton of options in Snarl's settings to allow the user to change behavior as well as look and feel. You can also download more themes and plugins for the program.

While Snarl supports popular applications like foobar, Pidgin, iTunes, and Spotify, it's complicated to register applications with them. For example, you have to download an extension for foobar to get it to work with Snarl. Growl for Mac, meanwhile, automatically picks up on any new application that supports its notification protocol, which would be nice to see on this Windows version.

Overall, Snarl is a great replacement for the default Windows notifications, but it could use some work making it more user friendly.

When you empty files from the recycle bin, they are not securely deleted from your hard drive. It's possible to retrieve data that has been 'erased' in that way. Eraser deletes files properly and securely.

Eraser is very effective, but it's not easy to use when first opened. Clicking Erase Schedule will allow you to get started. First you choose a task type, and name if you like, from manual and immediate tasks to recurring ones. Then clicking Add Data will allow you to choose what you want to erase. That part is simple! Pick a file, folder, unused space or the recycle bin to erase and hit OK.

The speed of the erasing process depends on the size of the data being erased and the type of erasing being done. In settings, there's a huge list of erase options, including erase methods with impressive names like Gutman and US Air Force. Basically, the more 'passes' Eraser takes, the more securely erased the data is, and also the longer it takes. However, a weekly recycle bin erase won't take very long even if you use the most secure method.

The most useful feature of Eraser is scheduled erasing - it's great to have an automated daily or weekly scrub of your hard drive. If you are really paranoid, Eraser will even replace erased files with files of your choice to 'allow plausible deniability'. We hope no one would ever need such a feature, but it indicates how serious Eraser is about deletion!

Eraser isn't user friendly enough, but once you're used to it it's not complex, and a very helpful tool for ensuring your deleted data never ends up in the wrong hands!
